Chapter Thirteen

Ben phoned the casino’s restaurants on the drive up, in order of their preferences, and was finally able to snag a table at Cucina Vivo; the newly revamped Italian dining sensation. It was rumoured to be expensive, but Ben’s voucher was for a hundred dollars so would cover a good portion of the bill.

Both deciding against appetisers because it was getting close to the starting time of the show, Christian chose Gamberoni Spadellati, which was basically king prawns in a delectable garlic sauce with a fancy dressed salad. Ben had the Gnocchi Trfolati made with wild mushrooms, truffle oil and marjoram. They preordered dessert to save time, and just managed to squeeze in their shared dish of Pizza Nutella e Mascarpone, which they’d both decided on as soon as they saw the “N” word.

Ben’s voucher more than covered the bill, even with a glass of wine each—Ben’s first since he’d met Christian, and of course it went straight to his head, making him a little handsy and giggly as they made their way into the showroom and to their allocated seats. Considering the show was only new, and Christian had only booked that morning, their seats were surprisingly good for a busy Thursday night.

It was an action-packed show for the whole ninety minutes it ran, with both of them loving the jugglers, magic tricks and amazing human feats on display. Ben was glad there were no animals involved because he hadn’t told Christian yet he didn’t do circuses featuring them, or zoos, on principle. It was purely Vegas-style entertainment: full of colour, amazing costumes and jaw-dropping raw talent, and the huge cast received a loud and long standing ovation at the end.

Christian and Ben held hands almost the whole show, only letting go to clap or cover their mouths in awe at the men whizzing around the “Globe of Death” on their noisy motorcycles. Christian continued holding on to his hand so they wouldn’t get separated in the dense crowd when leaving, and when they were clear and had some space he finally let go, only to put his arm around Ben’s shoulders and pull him close to his side. Ben was thrilled at Christian’s public affections and “he’s mine” attitude, and he wrapped his arm around Christian’s waist and held on to his belt as they walked back to the car. Although they were still pumped from the excitement of the show, it was getting late and they would both start flagging soon.

They shared their favourite moments and highlights of the performance on the way home and then lulled into a comfortable silence for the rest of the drive until they parked in Christian’s spot and got upstairs and into the apartment.

Deciding to head straight to bed so they could be well-rested for Christian to catch an early surf in the morning before Ben’s interview and then outpatient appointment, Christian didn’t even give Ben the option of sleeping in his own bed, dragging him by the hand into his room and slowly removing Ben’s clothes.
